Refinish or Replace: The 5 Questions That Settle It

Refinish or Replace: The 5 Questions That Settle It

People usually open this decision with a question about price, and that is the 1 question that cannot be answered first. There are 5 that come before it, and once you have worked through them the answer is normally obvious. It takes about 5 minutes.

Here they are in the order that actually helps.

1. Is the fixture structurally sound?

Not how it looks. Whether it is solid. A bath that is cracked through, a basin that has corroded right the way through, tile that sounds hollow when you tap it, or an appliance whose casing has gone at the base. If the answer is no, the decision is made and refinishing is not it. A new surface needs sound material underneath, and we will tell you when it is not there.

2. Is the problem the surface, or the thing itself?

This is where most people find their answer. Staining, dullness, yellowing, a dated colour, chips and surface rust are all surface problems. A bath that is the wrong size, a layout you dislike, or an appliance that keeps breaking down are not. Refinishing changes the surface. It does not change the format, the position or the mechanics.

If you dislike where the bath is, no finish will fix that.

3. What does replacement actually drag in with it?

Rarely just the fixture. Taking a bath out usually disturbs the tile around it, and what replaces it has to be fitted and the room made good afterwards. That can mean several trades over several weeks in a house you are living in. Refinishing keeps the fixture and the tile where they are, so the work stays inside 1 room. That difference matters more to most people than anything on the invoice.

4. What does Bermuda add?

Two things people leave out. A replacement fixture or appliance has to get to the island and into the house, and the old one has to come out and go somewhere. Neither is a detail here. It is why the comparison looks different in Bermuda from the one you would read on a site written for somewhere else, and it is worth counting properly on our refinish or replace page.

5. How long do you want it to last, and what is in writing?

Ask what is covered, and ask for it in writing. Our repairs carry a 6 month written warranty and a full reglaze carries 1 year, set out with the quote. What we will not do is give you a figure for how many years a finish will last, because it depends on the fixture, the room and how it is used, and anyone who gives you a confident number for that is guessing.

So what if the answers point at refinishing?

Then the next step is small. Two photographs, one of the whole fixture and one close up of the worst area, and you get a written price for that specific job with an honest view on whether it suits the work. The sequence a visit follows is on our process page, and finished examples are on our before and after page.

What if the answers point at replacement?

Then we will tell you, and that is worth more than a quote. We do not take on renovation, tile laying, plumbing or mechanical appliance repair, so a fixture that genuinely needs replacing is not work we can sell you either way. The advice costs nothing and it is honest for that reason.

It happens more often than people expect on appliances and less often than expected on baths.

Cast iron and steel baths in older Bermuda homes are usually structurally fine and cosmetically finished, which is exactly the shape refinishing is for.

How do you get a real answer rather than a sales one?

Ask for the reasoning, not just the price. Ask what happens to the chips and the corrosion before any new finish goes on. Ask what is covered in writing and for how long. Ask when the surface can be used again for your job rather than in general. A contractor who answers those clearly is telling you how they work, and a contractor who is vague about all three is telling you that as well.

What if you get different answers from different contractors?

Compare the reasoning rather than the price. A quote that explains what happens to the chips and the corrosion before any finish goes on is describing a different job from one that does not mention them, even if the two numbers are close.

Ask all of them the same three questions and the differences become obvious.

What is covered, for how long, and when can the surface be used again for this specific job.

What should you do next?

Send those photos with a quote request. SimPro has been refinishing surfaces in Bermuda homes since 2008, across all nine parishes, and we come to you. You can also call (441) 236-8827 and talk it through first.

Ask us the same questions you would ask anyone else quoting for it. We would rather answer them plainly than win the work on a number, and if the honest answer is that refinishing is not right for your fixture, that is the answer you will get.

How do I decide whether to refinish or replace?
